Software-defined WAN

What is SD-WAN?

Software Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) is a revolutionary way to address the simplification of branch office networking and deliver optimal application performance through centrally managed and managed WAN virtualization.

Unlike traditional WANs, SD-WAN provides higher network agility and cost reduction. SD-WAN has its roots in software-defined networking (SDN), the underlying principle that abstracts network hardware and transports properties of the applications that use the network.


SD-WAN is WAN virtualization

In the same way that server virtualization abstracts the underlying physical hardware from the logical virtual servers that run on it, WAN virtualization is where a logical WAN connection (either to the Internet or to the Internet) is used between branches) can simultaneously leverage multiple underlying connectivity technologies (such as xDSL, MPLS, cellular, and fiber), but present this connectivity to users and applications as a single, direct connection to the Internet or a secure site-to-site connection.

You can create and automatically install complex VPN configurations that securely connect thousands of branch offices (using the connectivity available at each site). WAN monitoring is central and notifications provide a real-time view of WAN status and global availability of branch offices.

SD-WAN is secure VPN

Using encrypted VPN, branch offices achieve secure, local network access to cloud resources. SD-WAN makes these branch office VPNs faster and more affordable by combining the bandwidth of multiple connections into a single logical WAN connection. In addition, SD-WAN provides the ability to offload public Internet traffic at the network edge, which reduces the traffic sent over the VPN.
